Guy Ben-Ner: Thursday the 12th
Over the past decade Guy Ben-Ner has become known for a series of playful videos which often star the artist and his young children. The humorous, home-made films - which MASS MoCA will present this summer in a major survey exhibition - have an authentic, do-it-yourself appeal, though their deceptive simplicity quickly reveals sophisticated cinematic and literary influences - ranging from the physical comedy of Buster Keaton and the humanist films of François Truffaut to literary classics such as Herman Melville's Moby Dick and Daniel Dafoe's Robinson Crusoe. Exhibited with the simple sets and props created for the videos, Ben-Ner's work demystifies the creative process, symbolically inviting the viewer to move into the realm of production.

This Is Killing Me
Drawing on the anxieties inherent in art-making, This is Killing Me brings together eight young artists who in their diverse practices make palpable a distinctive sense of unease about their identities as artists and the creation of their work. Although professional anxiety is common in all fields, artists often explore and harness these fears into central and driving themes. The artists in this exhibition point to a divide between the coolness and deft craftsmanship of their works and the apprehension and angst that went into their making. The amusing, often riotous quality of the pieces underscores this tension. The artists featured are: Whitney Bedford, Karl Haendel, Andrew Kuo, Sean Landers, Kalup Linzy, Shana Lutker, Marco Rios, and Joe Zane.

69° South: The Shackleton Project
This new work by the exciting young multi-media and marionette theater company Phantom Limb (Jessica Grindstaff and Erik Sanko, Co-Artistic Directors) tackles the extraordinary story of the Shackleton expedition. In 1914, Ernest Shackleton and 27 others set out to be the first team of explorers to cross Antarctica. After their ship, The Endurance, became frozen and was eventually crushed by the ice and sunk, they embarked on a harrowing two-year journey of survival in the harshest climate on earth. The production combines a dark aesthetic with fantastic music (Sanko was in the seminal jazz group The Lounge Lizards). Co-conceived with Kronos Quartet, the work is set to premiere in Fall 2011. Fresh from three weeks on location in Antarctica, the goal of their MASS MoCA residency will be to incorporate soundscape, puppetry, video and installation culminating in a live sound and video collage. Jones Street Station
Jones Street Station, who have been opening for Ben Kweller on his recent tour, “play their catchy originals with virtuosic mandolin jams and honky-tonk piano fillers, and top them with off-kilter, good-time harmonies.” (Time Out New York) Legendary rock critic Greil Marcus said listening to them "is like running down a mountain on a switchback trail, the sound of surprise generating its own momentum. There’s a punk glee inside the bluegrass craft -- and a punk vehemence inside the bluegrass smile.” Galleries open until 7:30 PM.Club B-10. $12 adv/$16 day of /$10 students Members 10% discount

Stephen Petronio: I Drink the Air Before Me
Stephen Petronio celebrates his company’s 25th Anniversary Season with the dynamic and elemental I Drink the Air Before Me, an evening-length work inspired by the power of extreme weather and storms, both atmospheric and internal. Widely regarded as one of the leading choreographers of his generation, sound, visual art and fashion collide in Petronio's dances to produce powerfully modern landscapes for the senses. Petronio’s predilection for forward thinking popular music -- his dancers have moved to Rufus Wainwright and Antony -- is satisfied here by a score from the beloved young composer Nico Muhly. This presentation marks MASS MoCA’s tenth annual co-presentation with Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. Galleries open until 7:30 PM on Saturday. Hunter Center. $38 orch/$32 mezz/ $20 students. Disfarmer
American portrait photographer Mike Disfarmer (1884-1959) operated a photography studio in Heber Springs, Arkansas, where for years locals and tourists lined up to have their picture made. Disfarmer used glass plate photography long after it was obsolete; when thousands of these glass plates were discovered in the 1970's, his photographs were acknowledged as a stunning achievement for their exquisite artistry, their profound empathy for their subjects, and their invaluable documentation of a way of life that has all but vanished. Director and designer Dan Hurlin has recreated a visceral sense of Mike Disfarmer's interior and exterior worlds, illuminating the contradictions in the life of this American hermit and portrait artist. The production features the American style of "tabletop" puppetry, projections of Disfarmer's photographs and images produced by old optical techniques, and a haunting score derived from antique recording technologies like Edison Wax disks. Galleries open until 7:30 PM. $19 advance/$24 day of/ $10 students Members 10% discount.
